The UN Special Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, condemned today a mortar attack that killed one boy and injured 11 others in the besieged city of Taiz.
“I condemn the attack that hit the Zaid Al Moshki residential neighborhood in Taiz that injured 11 boys and girls, mostly under the age of 10,” Grundberg said in a press statement. “A number of these children are reportedly in critical condition, and one boy has died of his injuries.”
The UN envoy reiterated that killing and injuring children is “particularly reprehensible.”
Yesterday, a mortar attack believed to be launched by the Iran-backed Houthis hit Zaid Al Moshiki residential neighborhood in Taiz. The attack killed six-year-old Al Baraa Murad Nasser and wounded another 11 children who happened to be playing when the mortar shell landed in their neighborhood.

Grundberg noted that it was alarming that the deadly attack took place during the truce that he works hard to get the warring parties to extend.
He added that the people of Taiz, which has been besieged by the Houthis for seven years now, have suffered a lot and need the truce to alleviate their suffering.
“The people of Taiz have suffered immensely through seven years of war, and they, too, need the truce to deliver for them in all its aspects,” said Grundberg.
