U.S. Department of State: Iran’s intent to use the Houthis to expand its malign influence is clear

The United States Department of State accused on Wednesday Iran of intending “to use the Houthis to expand its malign influence” in the region.

Spokesperson for the State Department Morgan Ortagus said in a Twitter post that Iran smuggled Hassan Irloo, an IRGC member, “under the guise of “Ambassador” to the Houthi militia.”

According to sources familiar with the matter, Hassan Irloo was a prominent military leader in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) who served as a military advisor to Hizballah.

On Saturday, The Iranian Foreign Ministry announced the arrival of its ambassador to its proxy Houthi militia in the rebel-held capital, Sana’a, a move that was strongly denounced by Yemen’s internationally recognized government
