Amid tightening tensions between the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) and Southern National Coalition (SNC), thousands of Yemenis took to the streets of Abyan province on Monday to express refusal of self-rule and exclusion practiced by the STC in south Yemen
The rally was organized by SNC where protesters raised flags of Yemen’s as well as pictures and banners in support of Yemen’s unity.
The SNC called in a statement for “a speedy implementation of the Riyadh agreement and inclusion of all political and social powers in southern provinces in the next government”.
In late April, the STC declared the start of self-rule phase in south Yemen, a move that was widely criticized by local and international actors.
The Saudi-brokered agreement was signed between Yemen’s legitimate government and STC in November 2019 in the kingdom’s capital Riyadh to end months of struggling for power, but nothing has been done to implement the deal.
