Yemen’s National Army has managed to recapture areas it had lost to the Houthis, Iran’s proxy in Yemen, in the northeastern province of Al Jawaf where fierce battles have been taking place for the past two months.
Military sources reiterated that the Yemeni army has managed to retake strategic area of al-Yatima.
Following the capturing of al-Yatima, the army took control of Al-Khanjar Camp and advanced towards al-Mahashemah and al-Saliliah areas, opening a vital road that links al-Yatima to Marib province, the sources said.
Last week, the Houthi insurgents seized the strategic city of Al-Hazm, capital of Al Jawaf, in a major blow to Yemen’s internationally recognized government. Since then, the militias have been eyeing the oil-rich province of Marib where the Yemeni government is based.
This has pushed UN Special Envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths to call for an immediate military de-escalation, warning of a potential spread of fighting in the province.
