Houthi Militias Seize Capital of Al Jawf Province

Republican Yemen

In a major blow to Yemen’s internationally recognized government, the Iran-backed Houthi rebels took over the strategic city of Al-Hazm, located in the center of the northern province of Al Jawaf.

Houthi-run Almasirah TV showed Sunday videos of the militia combatants wandering in Al-Hazm city as officials on both sides of the conflict confirmed that Houthis have seized the northern strategic city.

According to local sources, the government has pushed military reinforcement to back forces and tribesmen led by Al Jawaf Governor Ameen al-Akimi, who refused to leave the province, in an attempt to retake areas captured by the rebels.

Experts describe the infighting in Al Jawf as a do-or-die battle for the internationally recognized government as capturing Al Jawf province would pave the way for Houthis to move toward the center of the oil-rich province of Marib, where the government is based.
