Houthi Rebels Plead International Recognition, Appoint Ambassador to Iran

The rebels say they will cease attacks on Saudi Arabia in return for international recognition

August 18 (Republican Yemen) ___The Iran-aligned Houthi rebels appointed on Saturday an ambassador to Iran, calling on the international community to follow suit in recognizing their coup.

The militia appointed Al Dailami ___ the director-general of Al Masirah TV___  ambassador to Iran, their main financier and supporter, Houthi-run Al Masirah TV said on Saturday.

Boasting of having ties with Khamenei, Abdul Malek al-Houthi, head of the group, pleaded once again for international recognition of his coup.

In a speech, he urged the international community to follow in Iran’s example and recognize the militias by reopening embassies in Sanaa and activating diplomatic ties with the militias seeing as they are the “legitimate” rulers in Yemen, Asharaq Al Awsat reported on Sunday.

He attempted to propose a compromise whereby the Houthis would cease launching Iranian-made drones towards Saudi Arabia in return for the Saudi-led Arab coalition to quit supporting the legitimate government in Yemen.

The internationally recognized government of President Abdrabu Mansour Hadi___ which severed ties with Iran in 2015 over the Islamic Republic’s support for the armed group___ denounced the Houthi move and described it as a “blatant violation” of international laws and customs.

The state-run Iranian Republic News Agency also reported the news, quoting Houthi leader Abdulmalek Al Houthi as having “praised Iran’s clear and frank support for Yemen”.

Since they staged a coup in 2015, Houthi rebels have been attempting to gain international recognition believing that being a de facto authority will eventually legitimize their coup.
