Brig. Gen. Abdo Mugali, spokesman for the Yemeni army, told Okaz – Saudi-based newspaper- yesterday that some Iranian experts train members of the Houthi militia to target and booby trap ships in the territorial waters.
” We have intel there is a number of Iranian experts – in Al Lihia area, a coastal area in the province of Hodeidah, west Yemen – who train members of the Houthi militia on using self-propelled boats aimed at targeting and booby trapping ships,” he said.
Brig. Gen. Abdo Mugali said, based on the information they obtained, that the training takes place in the islands of Talaween and Almalik as well as the area of Khor al-Alawi in which Houthis hide their weapons and have training camps.
A UN report in 2008 confirmed the increasing threats by Houthis to maritime security in the Red Sea, citing anti-ship missiles, naval mines and self-guided explosive boats.
The report mentioned repeated attacks by Houthis on oil tankers, with a load of 2.2 million barrels of crude oil, which could have caused an environmental disaster in the region.
