Yemen Situation is Disastrous, Could Worsen: UNSG

Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary General has alerted on Monday in France about the complex picture in Yemen, a country that is living ”a disastrous situation” and that in 2019 could live the worst famine in recent years.
In an interview with France Inter, Guterres said that the UN is currently providing humanitarian aid to some eight million people, and the figure could reach 14 million next year.

The secretary general, who on Sunday participated in the activities commemorating the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, called for a political solution to the conflict in Yemen.

In this regard, he stressed there is a consensus among major world powers to progress in this direction, including Russia, the United States, Europe and some countries in the region.

According to Guterres, there is an opportunity to make the direct actors in this conflict understand that it needs to end, and ‘there has to be a political solution.

The UN is constantly calling for ways to achieve an end to the crisis in Yemen, which has been worsening since 2015 with the intervention of a military coalition led by Saudi Arabia.
